woodcarving by Will Baddeley
One of the most rewarding techniques (when done properly), is the carving of dead wood. It is a form of art in its own right. It can make a mediocre tree look fantastic or the other way round...an amazing tree look bad.
I came across Will Baddeley's website/blog today and i was truly inspired by a series of pictures he took while carving a Yew.

Hi Wil,
i have seen the pics on your blog since last night..... just breathtaking........
May i ask something? how do you manage to make the wood crack by using the blowtorch?? doesn't it burn the wood and turn it into charcoal?? or do you keep the flame only for short periods of time repeatedly??
As for the pics, i will have a look and make sure that if there is a problem, it will be solved. It should work the same way as with the IBC forum.

Morning Stavros. With burning the wood, it depends on the thickness and how deep the tool marks are that you want to remove. Yes the wood is turned to Charcoal with the heat. It also cracks nicely too. All the charcoal is wire brushed and then treated.

Hello everyone. Been trying out some new carving bits on a nursery Yew. I would love to post some pictures from my desktop but the forum doesn't allow it strangely. Anyway I have the pictures on my blog Here. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
